First verify that your data is stored in Microsoft SQL Server (2008 R2 or later versions):

Error list: Issue/Resolution

Error 6: Change to using IP address in the connection string in 'Connection Security'

Is this a remote connection? If so remote connections are disabled by default. Did you check the Surface Area Configuration Manager?
Look at the Database Engine -> Remote Connections option.

Error 11: Verify you are running the latest SQL service pack.
Error 17:  Run Cliconfg from Windows\system32 and make sure TCP\IP and Named Pipes are enabled. Run “netstat –an” to find what ports are running on the server.
It can’t find server through Named Pipes nor TCP/IP, so it tried DBNETLIB. It can’t find the server.
If you have IP address entered in connection string, do you have two NICs on the SQL Server.
Error 1904: Module C:\WINNT\system32\msxml4.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024891. Contact your local IT Group support personnel.

Error 4060: Multiple possible authentication issues detailed in https://portal.teamsupport.com/protected/ViewKBArticle.aspx?ArticleID=2718833

Error 18452: [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [SQL Server] Login failed for user 'LOGIN_NAME'.
Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection
The server is set to Windows Authentication. Either change to SQL Server and Windows authentication or follow new “Installation Instructions for SQL” to use Windows Only.

Another possibility is that no authentication is being done from the workstation side, therefore no credentials are being passed through. Create local user accounts on the desktops that match the network drive mapping credentials used to connect to the shared drive.

Error 18456: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'User Name'
Server and 'Connection Security' connection string are set to different types of authentication.
Testing with server set to “SQL Server and Windows authentication” with 'Connection Security' set to “Windows authentication” results in this error.
Change 'Connection Security' to use SQL authentication.
EDU IT staff to determine cause of Windows authentication failure.
